Main entrance and stairwell of the swimming pool equipped with 160m² mosaic wall tiles with print, with a unique end result.
A new vibrant city center is emerging in South Rotterdam: Hart van Zuid. The first completed project in this area development is the Rotterdam Swimming Center with a 50-meter competition swimming pool and a 25-meter target group swimming pool. A place for top sports and the people of Rotterdam from the South. In the new international competition swimming pool, the walls in the main entrance and the stairwell are fitted with attractive Mozawall mosaic wall panels with print. The unique design of the Mozawall mosaic wall decoration comes from the design agency SILO. The construction project was carried out by Ballast Nedam and is part of the extensive Hart van Zuid area development in Rotterdam.
Challenge
The design of the 160m2 mosaic wall comes from SILO from The Hague. The agency was commissioned to create a design that gives visitors a pleasant and safe feeling when entering the swimming pool. The entrance to the center is an unmanned hall with a staircase and elevator. Only on the first floor are catering, ticket sales and access to the swimming pool. The challenge for SILO was to ensure that visitors feel welcome, but also that the entrance hall is a safe space. The design and implementation also had to meet specific quality requirements.
SILO's surreal intervention
“We chose to connect the swimming pool and its visitors through a unique welcome. For the walls of the entrance hall, we created a continuous image that combines hand-drawn illustration and a 3D manipulated graph. You expect most visual elements in a swimming pool: sports and games, graphic lines, brightly colored raft lines, wall tiles, water flow and reflection. Three whales also appear in this interplay: large but benign. A surreal intervention that is at the same time welcoming and very appropriate,” says Rene Toneman, Creative Director of SILO.
