Mosaic wall tiles in the entrance of a swimming pool

The entrance hall and staircase of the Rotterdam (The Netherlands) Aquatics Centre, made of 967,375 printed mosaic wall tiles stretching over 160m², is totally unique.

A new vibrant community hub is under construction in South Rotterdam. The Rotterdam Aquatics Centre with a 50-metre long contest pool and a 25-metre long multi-use pool was the first project to be completed in the redevelopment programme. It is a fantastic venue for élite sport and the people of South Rotterdam. The walls of the entrance hall and staircase of the new Olympic-size swimming pool are fitted with attractive Mozawall® printed mosaic panels. SILO Agency from The Hague designed the Mozawall® wall-decoration print. Ballast Nedam was the main contractor for the construction project, which is part of a comprehensive urban redevelopment programme in South Rotterdam.

Meeting the challenge

SILO Agency from The Hague designed the 160m2 mosaic wall. The Agency was commissioned to come up with a design that would make visitors feel welcome and safe on arrival at the swimming pool. The entrance to the centre is a non-staffed hall with a staircase and lift. The hospitality area, ticket sales desk and access to the pool are located on the first floor. The challenge for SILO was to ensure that visitors would feel welcome and safe in the entrance hall. The design and construction work also had to meet specific quality requirements.

SILO Agency’s surrealistic intervention

“We chose to connect the aquatics centre and its visitors with an idiosyncratic welcome. For the walls of the entrance hall, we created a singular image which combines hand-drawn illustrations with 3D-manipulated graphics. Most of the visual elements you would expect in a swimming pool: sport and games, graphic lines, brightly coloured lane ropes, wall tiles, water splashing and reflections. The playful amalgamation of elements features three gigantic, but obviously good-natured and friendly whales. A welcoming intervention that is surreal, yet very appropriate,” says Rene Toneman, Creative Director of SILO Agency.

The advantages of Mozawall® printed mosaic wall tiles

SILO Agency chose Mozawall® because of its unparalleled mosaic wall panel design possibilities. Because of their durability, Mozawall® wall decoration products are ideal for sports facilities such as swimming pools, shower rooms and changing rooms. Mozawall® is vandal-proof and has excellent fire-retardant properties, which is essential in a stairwell. The combination of characteristics and the possibility of being able to translate specific designs and patterns into mosaic were key factors in selecting Mozawall® for this unique and extraordinary wall decoration project.
